God has been merciful
to mankind. His plans are perfect. When the first covenant was established, the
law was its guiding principle. But sinful man broke the law and deserved to
die. God in his mercy decided to save the man he had made from death. He replaced
the old covenant with a new one which depends no longer on the law but on
faith.
In his letter to the
Galatians, Paul wrote that a man is put right with God only through faith and
not by doing what the law requires (Gal 2:16). Having faith in God is central
to the new covenant. Jesus said, 'for what my Father wants is that all who
see the Son and believe in him should have eternal life. . .' (John 6:40).
God realized that mortal man could not help himself, so he intervened with a
perfect salvation formula. John 3:18 says: 'Those who believe in the Son are
not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they
have not believed in God's only Son'. By believing in Jesus, we share in
his death and since he has been raised to life, we shall also live. In 2Cor
5:21, Paul reminds us that Christ was without sin but God made him share our
sin so that in union with him we might share the righteousness of God.
May the Holy Spirit
teach us to have faith in Christ that we may live now and always in Jesus name,
amen.
